ESWATINI RECORDS INCREASE IN PROPERTY REGISTRATION

The Investor Roadmap Unit (IRMU) under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade has announced an increased in
the number of registered properties in the country. IRMU Director Albert Chibi informed this publication that the country was ranked by the World Bank Ease of Dong Business Report at 115 out of 177 countries in 2017. The Unit became operational in August 2014 and was given a three-year lifespan, which came to an end in July 2017. Since the inception of the IRMU, Eswatini attained the results highlighted and has shown some positive improvement, where it moved from number 123 in 2014 to number 105; but regressed to number 117 in 2017 in the World Bank Ease of Doing Business Index. This regression was caused by a number of factors which, among other things, include the lack of laws which support ease of doing business. Chibi said some of these laws have been pending in Parliament for a while now. He stated that they were working on improving the statistics for the country to attain first world
as per vision 2022 and to improve the current economic crisis. “Registered property, which is the only category that improved in the Eswatini rankings, is an indication that we are cable to improve the other categories, which include starting a business, dealing with construction, permits, getting electricity, paying taxes, trading across borders amongst other things. Chibi said they would increase the transparency of information by publishing fees, procedures and timelines for registering property on the website.
