Pig Production


MBABANE– Mpisi Farm is worki n g t o w a r d s ensuring that the kingdom of Eswatini becomes the number one pig producer in the region. To achieve this end, Mpisi Pig Breeding has set up a project in a quest to increase pig production in the country. Mpisi Pig Breeding, through the assistance of the Taiwan Technical Mission, aims to establish a supply system for high quality breeding pigs. This will see the expansion of production at Mpisi Breeding Station to 500 high quality hybrid gilts per year as well as the improvement of the facilities of equipment at the breeding station including the renovation of three piggeries and the new establishment of a new Artificial Insemination Center. According to Xolani Ndlangamandla Project Coordinator at Mpisi Breeding Station, this is a five year project which will ensure that pig farmers acquire the necessary skills that will help them in breeding pigs. The kingdom of Eswatini has been importing large amount of pork but since the implementation of the project, less of pork has been imported by the country. The expert revealed that they have a good relationship with other key players in the industry including the Ministry of Agriculture and the farmers who are the major stakeholders. The project’s objectives are also to host training workshops and strengthen the techniques of the pig
industry in the kingdom as well as help improve pork production and quality and boost pork supply in the domestic market thus decreasing the import of products. He announced that there would be four regional training courses that seek to improve pig farming and anoother twenty courses on pig feeding and management.
