King’s Golf Cup to boost tourism

The annual King’s Golf Cup, which has been slated for the first week of September, has been earmarked as the next event after the recent Buganu ceremony to attract both domestic and international tourists into the country, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Minister Moses Vilakati announced. Speaking during the launch of the King’s Golf Cup at the Royal Swazi Convention Centre, the minister said this year’s edition would be bigger and better, and did not doubt that tourism would benefit from it, as both local and international golfers were expected to do battle for one of the most prestigious golf prizes in the region. Vilakati said one of the trends of the last decade around the world is the growing investments in golf in an effort to increase the number of foreign visitors and enhance tourism revenue. He said this had seen the spread of golf globally and the number of world class golf courses has been steadily rising as well. More prestigious corporate brands have been getting involved in the
sponsorship of golf in recent years. This has seen the emergence of sponsorship from local corporate companies such as MTN Eswatini, Eswatini Post and Telecommunications Corporation (EPTC) to mention only but a few. The minister
commended the development of exquisite golf resorts in the country, which offer great golfing experience.
Vilakati said a certain percentage of tourists travel worldwide with the sole purpose of playing golf and more countries, including Eswatini, embrace golf tourism as a key source of foreign exchange. “Developing countries have not been left behind by the golf tourism bandwagon. These countries have recognized that golf tourists tend
to outspend average tourists and thus have invested heavily so as to reap the benefits of extra foreign revenue,” he said. This year’s edition has increased from the initial E350 000 prize package to E1 million. The King’s Golf Cup will be broadcast live on SuperSport TV, where it is viewed by 400 000 households on DSTV Sports Channel thanks to the sponsorship by Sunshine Tour. Furthermore, the tournament will also see the participation of Eswati- ni’s own Nobuhle Dlamini, who is currently ranked fifth in the African continent. This will be a great motivation to the young and aspiring golfers in the kingdom who are still horning their craft.
