NDMA RESCUES CHILD-HEADED FAMILY AFTER FIRE DISASTER

Afive-member child headed household was left homeless, and without food and clothing after the main house was struck by lightning. The incident happened a couple of days ago after the recent heavy rains that were accompanied by lightning. Relating the ordeal, Nolwazi Lushaba, the eldest in the family, said all their clothes were destroyed. Her younger sister’s school uniform was also destroyed in the process. She they also lost the little food they had. However, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) responded swiftly to alleviate the plight of the children, who previously depended on hand-outs, providing three mattresses, three blankets, a 5kg bag of rice, beans and cooking oil. Response action carried out by the NDMA immediately before, during, and after a hazard is aimed at saving lives, reducing economic losses, and alleviating suffering. Lushaba explains the ordeal: “We hid in a separate hut where we usually do our cooking when it started to rain heavily. We heard a cracking sound of thunder. When we peeped through, we saw the house where we sleep burning.” She said they were very lucky because, had they moved to the house earlier, they would have died. She thanked the NDMA for responding swiftly and assisted them out of a difficult situation. “All the food we had was destroyed. At least now we have some food to cover us
for a few days.” She said for now they would sleep in the hut normally used for cooking and storage of food
and related items. She expressed gratitude that they had shelter, further appreciating the fact that they would be sleeping on mattresses under warm blankets. NDMA will also be constructing a two-room house for the child-headed
family to restore the family to the same state they were in before the incident happened, or better. The
principle of restoring or building improved structures for disaster victims is a key component of Disaster
Risk Management and of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk
