SEAC URGES ESWATINI TO ABIDE BY ELECTORAL CODES

MBABANE – The S A D C Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC) has advised the kingdom of Eswatini
to abide by electoral codes in conducting democratic elections. During a presentation held at the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) attended by the local media, the SADC-SEAC’s Justice John Tendwa
said, “The voter education capacitates and empowers all eligible citizens, as well as fostering ownership of the electorate process and democratic political system”. He encouraged Emaswati to abide by the electoral code of conduct of the SADC region and the compliance with all national laws and regulations, which were outlined during the civil and voter education in the kingdom. The local civil and voter education was conducted in all chiefdoms
around the country months before the elections’ registration process. All SADC member states are expected to abide by the principles for conducting democratic elections. On another note, the electoral observers are expected to maintain personal discipline and behavior that is beyond reproach. He also revealed that electoral observers in the polling stations assist in enhancing transparency, political credibility and acceptance of the election results.
“The observers are entitled to giving all information gathered or witnessed by them honestly and accurately. We promote and respect the values of electoral justice which include integrity, impartiality, fairness, professionalism, efficiency and regularity of elections”, he added. The issue of journalists prohibited to take pictures at polling stations was also discussed. Tendwa said that the council promotes necessary conditions to
foster transparency, freedom of media, access to information by all citizens and equal opportunities for
all candidates and political parties to use the state media. “The principles also guarantee an environment of open contest with no undue exclusion and restrictions on anyone to vote as well as the right of eligible and qualified citizens to stand as candidates in any elections and a full participation of all citizens in democratic and
development”, he explained. The electoral observation also provides an impartial and methodical assessment of electoral outcomes. The electoral principles are to promote and enhance adherence to the principles of the rule law
premised upon the respect for; supremacy of the Constitution and constitutional order in the political arrangements of respective members holding elections.
